“Lēkhanam kapha medasō” Lēkhana means pacifying Kapha and reducing fat deposits – Caraka Samhita
An excessive accumulation of Mēda (fat/adipose tissue) and Māmsa (flesh/muscle tissue) leads to largening of hips, abdomen, and breasts and is known as Atisthūla (Obesity). Obesity has been identified as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.
Fast food culture, stressful fast paced life and lack of exercise in our lifestyles are the main risk factors for obesity. Our diet is often full of heavy, oily, sweet and Kapha increasing food, which, coupled with lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle results in excessive nourishment of Mēdas while other bodily elements (Dhātus) are deprived of nourishment.
This also leads to Pramēha (urinary diseases including glycosuria) and may also initiate dyslipidaemia. According to Caraka an increase in Mādas causes decrease of life span, decrease in energy and drive, loss of libido, weakness, excess perspiration and excessive hunger and thirst.
